Manchester Senior apartments to be declared smoke free zones in June 2013 Reports CarltonSeniorLiving.com

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 15, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Older citizens of Manchester are being deprived of their right to smoke as the government-subsidized apartments are expected to be declared smoke-free zones in June of 2013. Building management insisted on making it absolutely smoke free and therefore have delivered notices to all residents.

The management of Carpenter Center, a 96-unit apartment, started delivering notices to the residents in April. The notice was enacted in order to make the building smoke-free, which spread a wave of anger among the senior citizens.

The residents rejected the proposal and said that it was against their basic rights. The smokers believe that their rights are being violated, therefore they will stand against the new rules. The smokers agree that when they first moved in to the building, there was no such condition applied and it will be unfair to impose this new rule.

Meanwhile, the non-smokers of the building, who have also raised a voice for their rights, have demanded the new rule imposed in any way. They argue it is their right to breathe fresh air.

Linda Linton, who is working against smoking said on this event that, “It's throughout the hallways. You can go from floor to floor; there's so much cigarette smoke because there's so many chain smokers.”

The spokesperson of the building management said, “We're not telling people they have to quit. You can still smoke; you just can't smoke on the property.”

Rejecting the proposal, resident of the building, Ray Bergeron said, “People say 'The smoke is killing me.' How's it killing you when you're 80 years old?”

Another smoker, Pat McLennan, protested against the new rule and said, “I live on the ninth floor; they want to make a trip up there, they can.”
