The FDA approved the drug in 2009, but clinical studies have since shown Multaq may double the risk of death for patients with permanent atrial fibrillation. The FDA continues to evaluate the risks for patients prescribed Multaq with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, persistent atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
