Vaginal mesh lawsuits refer to the synthetic surgical device that is implanted either vaginally or abdominally, used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) or stress urinary incontinence (SUI).
Pelvic organ prolapse, or POP, is a common condition in women where the pelvic organs bulge- organs bulge- or descend- into the vagina. This condition is common in women who have undergone childbirth or have had a hysterectomy. After childbirth or a hysterectomy, the muscles and ligaments that hold the pelvic organs in place become so weakened that the pelvic organs slip out of place. The most effected organ is the bladder, but sometimes the uterus, small bowel, rectum, or vagina can prolapse.
Stress urinary incontinence, or SUI, can be described as an involuntary loss of urine during physical activity such as sneezing, coughing, laughing or exercising. SUI is common as women age, and it is common in patients have suffered a neurological injury like a spinal cord injury or have multiple sclerosis. These patients cannot store urine in the bladders because it becomes overactive. A vaginal mesh can support the bladder to help decrease the need to urinate so frequently.
However, vaginal mesh has been linked with several complications, including mesh erosion where the device erodes into surrounding organs and can break through the skin. Women have also complained of bleeding, infection, painful urination and sexual intercourse and recurrence of POP or SUI which may take additional surgeries to correct.
In 2008, the United States Food and Drug Administration began to warn health care professionals about the vaginal mesh complications. The agency recommended that surgeons receive specialized training on how to correctly implant the device and tell their patients of any complications the agency deemed were serious.
Since then, complaints about the device have risen dramatically. In 2010 alone, over 500 women have filed lawsuits against vaginal mesh manufacturers.
