State Legislators Gather and Discuss State Policy Solutions

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 29, 2011 ) Cincinnati, OH -- Hundreds of legislators and policy leaders from across the nation are gathering in Cincinnati, Ohio, today for the American Legislative Exchange CouncilÂ’s (ALEC) Spring Task Force meeting. All policy issues from education to health care reform and state budget crises will be topics of discussion as they share successes and suggestions for public policy that will lead the nation to economic stability.

“ALEC legislators have been extremely successful thus far this legislative session,” says Louisiana State Rep. Noble Ellington, ALEC’s 2011 National Chairman. “Our initiatives on health care, budget reform and environmental policies have all gained traction throughout the states thanks to our legislative leaders. Citizens are calling for more responsible and sensible policies, rather than the government running their lives. ALEC members are delivering the solutions for a healthy, successful economy and this week we’re continuing that mission.”

ALEC members will share how recent legislation has affected their states and propose ideas for new model bills that will benefit other states in the future. ALEC meetings are designed to help legislators share and learn best practices from each other. Publications such as ALECÂ’s Rich States, Poor States and the Report Card on American Education study the major successes and failures of state policies concerning budget and education reform. At the meeting, states that face challenges in implementing constitutional healthcare reform will hear about successful methods other states have used to keep the federal government out of citizens' healthcare decisions.

Should any new policies be accepted by ALECÂ’s eight policy task forces, the suggested model legislation will move to ALECÂ’s 23-member, public sector Board of Directors (Board) for consideration. The Board will have 30 days to decide whether to adopt these models as ALEC policy. Once policies are adopted by the Board, ALEC will announce those policies publicly and the models will be added to ALECÂ’s policy library for all members to utilize.
