Earth Day Celebration Last Week Highlights Need for Improvements

(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 02, 2011 ) DALLAS, TX- April 22 marked the 39th Annual Earth Day celebration. Earth Day began in 1970 after noticeable signs of pollution and environmental neglect began to alarm the public. The public began to see signs of pollution in rivers, streams, and oceans which prompted concern about the health of future generations as well as what the health effects might be of existing pollution. Most importantly, Earth Day was created to bring awareness working towards a healthy and sustainable environment, both nationally and internationally.

The public movement to make a cleaner environment environment lead to Congress passing the Clean Air Act in 1970 and the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Asbestos, a known human carcinogen, was one of the first environmental toxins to be regulated by the EPA and OSHA. However, despite this, asbestos is still not banned in the United States or Canada.

Canada still exports the dangerous material. In 2009, Canada exported nearly $90 million of raw asbestos to developing countries like Mexico and India. Recently, the government in Quebec agreed to sponsor the expansion of the Jeffery asbestos mine despite outcry from public health officials.

In developing countries like Mexico and India, asbestos laws are lax, so people working with the material are at greater risk for health problems caused by inhaling or ingesting asbestos fibers.

When these fibers are ingested or inhaled, the tissues surrounding the heart, lung, and abdomen become inflamed causing health problems, notably, mesothelioma which is a deadly form of lung cancer.

Approximately, between 2,000 and 3,000 people are given mesothelioma diagnoses each year in the United States.
It is unfortunate that many individuals who are diagnosed with mesothelioma do not experience any symptoms for up to thirty years after initial exposure. An early diagnosis of the disease can help improve prognosis. Since it may take so long for patients to experience any symptoms, the disease may be misdiagnosed as pneumonia or other health conditions during its early stages.

The continued use of asbestos could lead to more mesothelioma and other asbestos cancer diagnoses.

Many who suffer from the disease seek legal counsel from mesothelioma lawyers since asbestos manufacturers knew about its dangerous affects for years, but failed to let the public know.
