New York Basketball Coach Pleads Guilty To Sexual Abuse

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 06, 2011 ) Boston, MA -- A sensational former basketball coach of Christ the King Regional High School pleaded guilty Monday morning in Massachusetts to sexually maltreating a teenager during a 1970Â’s Boston trip.

Robert Oliva, 66, who resigned from coaching Christ the King Regional High School last year after an accusation of two counts of sexually abusing a child, could have served two life sentences in jail had he not pled guilty to abusing then 14-year-old Jimmy Carlino in a Boston Hotel in 1976. Oliva settled on a plea agreement with Suffolk DA Daniel F. Conley that places the coach on probation for five years. He was also compelled to register as a sex offender, cut all coaching and teaching practices, and have no unmonitored contact with any minors.

“I now realize I lost my childhood to Bob Olivia,” said Carlino to Suffolk Superior Judge Carol S. Ball during an emotional delivery of his victim impact statement. He then confronted Oliva, further adding, “You are a sick, disgusting person and a poor example of a human being who took advantage of your position and power in life. Jail is not the right place for this sexual predator as it will not change the vile person you are inside.”

The victim, now 49, stated that he was molested more than 100 times for four years during the 1970Â’s. The abuse took place in New York, Canada, Vermont, Florida, and other states.

CarlinoÂ’s attorney, Mitchell Garabedian, announced on the same day that he had filed a $20 million lawsuit against Oliva, Christ the King Regional High School, the Diocese of Brooklyn, and other Catholic organizations on Friday in a New York court. The suit claims that these Catholic institutions did not correctly supervise OlivaÂ’s actions.

The time during which prosecutors can file charges against Oliva has ended long ago, but according to Jake Wark, ConleyÂ’s spokesman, the time limit stopped New YorkÂ’s statute of limitations when Oliva left Massachusetts and came back to New York.

Garabedian also represents Allen Watson, former professional baseball pitcher, who claimed that Oliva showed him pornographic material and masturbated in front of him while Watson was still in his teenage years, but never molested him. Watson was also present in the hearing.

Carlino decided to come forward about the matter when he learned that he was not the only victim of Oliva. He accepted the five-year-probation Conley offered to Oliva, but Sam Albano, one of the witnesses to the case, had another stand, saying that the deal was “too lenient for the admitted sex offender Oliva.”

Judge Ball embraced Carlino at the end of the hearing and told him how great his victim impact statement was.

Oliva will be serving his sentence in South Carolina, where he is currently residing. He is ordered to comply with the stateÂ’s sex offender registration laws and GPS monitoring rules.
