(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 29, 2011 ) ABERDEEN, UNITED KINGDOM- A recent study suggests that people experience more chronic pain after a car accident than other physically traumatic events.
Gareth Jones of the University of Aberdeen School of Medicine and Dentistry, and colleagues studied more than 2,000 people who provided information about musculoskeletal pain and associated stress during three times over four years. Participants were also asked whether or not they had experience one of the six physically traumatic events the researchers picked.
These six traumatic events included: traffic crash, crash, workplace injury, surgery, fracture, hospitalization and childbirth.
One-third of the 241 respondents who reported recent onset of chronic widespread pain said that they had experienced at least one physically traumatic event during the study period.
The researchers found that after they adjusted for a number of factors, participants that had been in a car accident had an 84 percent increased risk of developing new onset widespread chronic pain.
According to Jones and colleagues, there was no link between chronic pain and hospitalization surgery, or childbirth. The study was published in the March 21 issue of the peer-reviewed journal, Arthritis Care & Research.
Jones explained that they believe there are patients who, in the event of a physically traumatic trigger, are more vulnerable to developing chronic widespread pain because of defined prior physical and psychological health. He also said that further research should be conducted on the unique aspects of an auto accident and an individual's reaction to the particular trauma that cause the increased risk of chronic widespread pain onset.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among those aged 5-34 in the United States. In 2009, more than 2.3 million adult drivers were treated in emergency rooms as the result of being injured in a motor vehicle accident.
