Boston Criminal Defense Lawyer Comments on Charges Against Massachusetts Attorney Robert A. George

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 26, 2011 ) Boston, MA - BostonÂ’s legal elite were stunned by yesterdayÂ’s arrest of well-known lawyer Robert A. George on federal charges of money laundering as well as shocked by the notion that a seasoned and much-admired colleague may land exactly where several of his infamous clients are, in jail.

Prominent Boston attorney Robert A. George was charged on May 24th by prosecutors with federal money laundering conspiracy. The criminal complaint alleges the 56-year-old Westwood, Mass., resident and a co-conspirator worked from 2009 to 2011 to “conceal the illicit source of of more than $225,000 in drug proceeds,” U.S. Attorney Carmen Ortiz’s office said in a prepared statement.

Nationally recognized Boston criminal defense attorney Rosemary Curran Scapicchio, who is representing George, called the unfolding drama “surreal” and “outrageous.”

"It's outrageous that the Government is spending the taxpayer’s money recruiting someone who has already committed a crime to set up Mr. George.” When questioned by reporters whether she thought this was a reprisal for some of the cases he's handled, Boston lawyer Scapicchio said, "I don't know what the government's motivation is here. I do know Mr. George is an attorney with thirty years of an impeccable record. He represents people who are charged with very serious crimes and he does a very good job at it. I'm sure the government is not happy with the job that he does. I am confident after we investigate these so called informants in this case he will be found not guilty at trial," adding, "Mr. George absolutely denies these charges and is outraged by what the government has done to him."

Mr. George whose clients have included former New England Mafia godfather Francis “Cadillac Frank” Salemme and Christopher McCowen, the Cape Cod trash collector convicted of the 2002 murder of Big Apple fashion scribe Christa Worthington - was arrested early yesterday morning at his $1.5 million manse in Westwood by Drug Enforcement Administration agents.

Many of George's peer's are speaking out in his defense. “He’s a really good lawyer and a real good guy,” said Boston Attorney Jeffrey Denner, George’s former colleague. “We’re all in shock at these allegations.”Attorney Thomas Drechsler called George “a fine lawyer. He’s entitled to his day in court. I hope everyone remembers that.”

Attorney Rosemary Curran Scapicchio is a member of the national attorney network on LawyerCentral.com.
