(EMAILWIRE.COM, January 25, 2011 ) Jacksonville, Florida – Personal injury law firm Morgan and Morgan has donated $30,000 to Jacksonville Area Legal Aid (JALA). The donation was made to help JALA keep Kara Roberts, an immigration attorney, on staff.
Ms. Roberts was in danger of losing her job due to state budget cuts and launched a fundraising campaign to help keep her position on JALAÂ’s staff handling immigration cases. Personal injury firm Morgan and Morgan heard about the campaign, and was moved. At Ms. RobertsÂ’ office, Morgan and Morgan attorney Michael Marrese presented Ms. Roberts and JALA with the funds needed to keep her on the staff.
Known as Legal Aid’s “Wonder Woman,” Ms. Roberts was supposed to lose her job by Jan. 1. However, Legal Aid Executive Director Michael Figgins stated that he had trouble letting her go due to the growing success of her fundraising campaign. In November, Ms. Roberts created a page on Facebook called the “Save Kara Project” to help raise money and foster a greater understanding of the services Legal Aid provides. As a result, JALA began receiving checks with “for Kara” and “save Kara” written in the memo line; some of the checks came from former clients, including a Palestinian man who obtained a green card with Ms. Roberts’ help. With the help of these donations and Morgan and Morgan’s generous check, Ms. Roberts will remain on JALA’s staff helping low-income individuals with immigration issues.
