Legalview Chronicles Canadian Asbestos Regulations

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 16, 2010 ) Denver, CO - LegalView, an online legal resource, is committed to chronicling international measures to prevent the spread of mesothelioma and use of asbestos, including the legislation in Canada to regulate how asbestos is installed in other countries to lessen the rates of mesothelioma, the deadly lung cancer.

Quebec's Industry Minister said that he would like to have the province's workplace-safety board perform annual audits on the safe use of asbestos originating from Quebec installed in other countries. Breathing in asbestos fibers can lead to mesothelioma which kills 107,000 people a year, according to the World Health Organization. The disease can strike 20 or even 30 years after minimal exposure.

According to the minister, the Quebec-produced asbestos, or chrysotite, is much safer than other types of asbestos used in the export market. Non-friable asbestos cannot be crumbled; whereas, friable means that the asbestos-containing material (ACM) contains at least one percent of asbestos and when dry, can be crumbled or broken-up, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Non-friable asbestos is much safer than other commercial forms of asbestos.

Canadian officials have encouraged other countries to use the necessary precautions as asbestos can be safely used if these safety measures are taken. For example, it has been reported that many countries do not require their workers to use protective gear. In the United States and Canada, protective gear must be worn when handling or tampering with asbestos. Protective gear includes: a respirator, disposable coveralls, rubber gloves and boots, and protective eye wear.

Interestingly, asbestos has been around for centuries - as early as Ancient Greece. However, it wasn't until World War II that asbestos exposure was linked to mesothelioma and other serious health problems. It was mostly used as fireproof instillation in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and manufactures and produces of asbestos did not inform their workers about its dangers even thought they knew about the hazards for years.

Mesothelioma symptoms include: shortness of breath, pain in the abdomen, or chest pain. Because symptoms take so long to manifest, those that have been exposed to asbestos are often misdiagnosed as having pneumonia or other diseases during its early stages.

Because of this and since mesothelioma can take years to manifest, many individuals who have been exposed to mesothelioma seek representation from a mesothelioma lawyer. Those who are most at risk for contracting mesothelioma include those that work in construction, and asbestos mining and removal.
