FEMA Awards $3 Million to Bay Area Rapid Transit District for Retrofit Projects

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 28, 2009 ) OAKLAND, Calif. – The U. S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) today released $3,000,000 in Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) funds to the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) for the non-structural seismic retrofit of essential equipment and systems.

The improvements are considered essential for the continued safe operation of BART in a major seismic event by mitigating the life safety risk to passengers and staff.

“Hazard mitigation projects protect communities from disruption and are the foundation of disaster prevention efforts,” said FEMA’s Region IX Administrator Nancy Ward. “This illustrates the importance of local, state and federal government working together to reduce injuries and decrease post-disaster costs at all levels of government.”

The project will anchor and brace nearly 4,000 non-structural components at 172 locations throughout the BART system including cabinets, storage racks, electrical and mechanical equipment, fire sprinklers, pre-fabricated buildings, suspended ceilings, and computer floors.

The HMGP funds provide 72 percent of the projectÂ’s total costs equaling $4,184,146. BART District General Obligation Bonds will cover the remaining balance.

FEMAÂ’s mission is to support our citizens and first responders to ensure that as a nation we work together to build, sustain, and improve our capability to prepare for, protect against, respond to, recover from, and mitigate all hazards.
