Tampa Bay Times reports that 2014 heroin overdose deaths were more than twice the deaths caused by heroin in 2013. Deaths caused by Fentanyl, a caustic synthetic drug sweeping the nation, eclipsed heroin at 538 and an 84 percent increase since 2013. Heroin is often adulterated with Fentanyl to intensify the narcotic drug's effects.
The rise in heroin and Fentanyl overdose deaths reflects the national trend of increased heroin abuse. The report notes the majority of Florida overdose victims possessed more than one illicit substance in their systems at the time of death.
