Massachusetts Senate OKs Measures to Reduce Opioid Abuse, Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston Comments

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 11, 2015 ) Boston, MA -- The Charlotte Observer reports the Senate of Massachusetts recently unanimously voted in favor of a bill that would discourage doctors in the state from irresponsibly prescribing opioid pain medication. The bill, which is now awaiting voting in the House, encourages doctors to find alternative means of pain management and increase screenings in public schools for potential substance abuse. Massachusetts is just one state currently experiencing the negative effects of substance abuse and fears that opioid medication abuse will lead to heroin use heavily influenced the bill's creation and procession through state law making authorities.

Some opposers fear if the bill passes it will only serve to punish those who benefit from opioid pain relievers but have no effects on the current drug abuse problem. However studies show that the majority of people abusing prescription pain medication are not prescribed the pills but gain access through a family member or friend's medicine cabinet. Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston and other centers providing heroin rehab in Boston recognize that the risks associated with opioid medications as a gateway to heroin exist and as such, new legislation is necessary.

A representative of Drug and Alcohol Rehab Boston commented:

"The concerns of those who rely on opioid medication for effective relief of their pain and nerve disorders are valid, but unfortunately the ever increasing drug abuse problem in the U.S. has lead to the need for stricter laws and protections for the community as a whole. There are potent alternatives to opioid pain relievers that help manage pain without addictive side effects. The Senators of Massachusetts recognize that the problem of drug abuse is not going to end without government action. We believe this bill is a step in the right direction for addressing a disease that, left unchecked, can cripple the country."
