Woman Blinded By Police Still Needs Surgery

(USGovernment-News.Com, December 10, 2014 ) Salt Lake City, UT -- A woman in Utah has filed a lawsuit against a police officer after he shot her in the eye when she was fleeing during a police chase that exceeded 30 miles. The incident happened about two years ago, and her attorney is saying that the victim still needs more medical care.

The officer involved contends that the woman was driving drunk and that her BAC or blood alcohol content level was close to four times over the state's limit of .08.

Due to the gunshot wound, the woman is now blind in her eye, which will impact her earning potential moving forward. She also has no feeling on the left side of her face, where the sustained the damage. She says she is suing because her civil rights were violated, which then led to her severe injuries. She will continue to incur further medical costs, as she will need at least two additional surgeries to help take care of her eye that is no longer functional.

While drunk driving is a serious known danger, does it justify being shot in the face and being blinded? The victim’s lawyer states that there was no need for these extreme measures.

The role of a deputy is to uphold the law and to make sure to serve and protect individuals in their jurisdiction. When pursuing suspects, officials need to act with regard to the health and safety of everyone involved. With examples such as the Ferguson case coming into the media’s light, police brutality seems to be a hot topic when it comes to civil matters, as well a personal injury claims these days.

Depending on the details of the claim, other victims of similar cases in this area may need a civil rights attorney, or a personal injury attorney, or possibly even both. The best way to clarify how to proceed is by consulting with a law office.
