Lipitor Diabetes Lawsuits Increase In April

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 22, 2014 ) Detroit, MI -- More than 190 new Lipitor Lawsuits were filed almost two months after a federal panel approved transferring and consolidating cases regarding the statin drug to a South Carolina Federal Court. As of April 15, 2014, statistics on the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation’s (JPML) website showed 464 Lipitor diabetes lawsuits filed since March 13, 2014, when 270 complaints had been filed by individuals who allege that they developed Type II diabetes after taking the prescription medication used to lower cholesterol.

In August 2013, the JPML denied the request to transfer the Lipitor diabetes lawsuits since there were only five pending complaints regarding the prescription drug at the time. However, the judicial panel reversed its decision in February 2014 after litigation increased to 56 cases against Pfizer, Inc., the manufacturer of Lipitor. According to the JPML’s transfer order, the judicial panel decided to consolidate the Lipitor cases since the allegations in the complaints were highly similar in contending that Pfizer Inc., failed to adequately warn doctors and consumers about the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes after taking the cholesterol-lowering medication and the company negligently and recklessly marketed the drug without giving adequate instructions or warnings. The Oliver Law group is currently representing four women in West Virginia who filed Lipitor diabetes lawsuits against Pfizer that allege they contracted diabetes after taking the statin drug. Three lawsuits were filed in the Northern District of West Virginia and the fourth was filed separately under MDL No. 2502.

The law firm continues to speak with people who believe they have suffered serious side-effects due to taking the cholesterol-lowering drug. Studies Show Lipitor and Other Statin Drugs Increase the Risk of Diabetes

Lipitor, generically known as atorvastatin calcium, was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996 to reduce bad cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein or LDL), and to reduce the risk of stroke, and heart problems in people with Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. In February 2012, the FDA ordered makers of cholesterol-lowering drugs, including Lipitor, to change the labels to reflect the serious risks of taking the statin drug, which include memory loss and confusion and hyperglycemia, which is an increase in blood sugar.

The Number of Lipitor Lawsuit Filings Sharply Increased After MDL Approval in February

The FDA issued the directive after reviewing studies that showed a connection between the use of statin drugs and diabetes. A study conducted from 1993 to 1998 and published in JAMA (The Journal of the American Medical Association) Internal Medicine showed, among other things, that post-menopausal women who took statin drugs had a higher rate for developing diabetes. Participants in the study included over 153,000 women, age 50 to 79, who did not have diabetes. Researchers followed up with the participants years later and discovered there were 10,242 women who contracted diabetes.
