JOYCE BANDA FACES RE-ELECTION CHALLENGE MAY 20, 2014

(USGovernment-News.Com, February 12, 2014 )
Lilongwe, Malawi -- April 7, 2014 will mark the second anniversary when Joyce Banda became the President of Malawi. When she gained that position she entered an elite group. Of the approximately two hundred sovereign states in the world, only 10% are headed by women. Only a small fraction of countries have female leadership in excess of 30%. Most political analysts agree that Joyce Banda has done remarkably well during the short time span she has been in office, though her tenure has not been without crises and controversies. At the moment of her succession a constitutional crisis was created due to opposition by her political adversaries who did not want her to assume the role of the Presidency. Through skillful negotiation she secured the loyalty of the military which surrounded her home in a protective fashion and obtained alliances with other high ranking leaders in Malawi.
Immediately after becoming President of Malawi, Joyce Banda was confronted with imminent economic problems caused in large part by the corruption of her predecessors. Austere financial measures were instituted and sweeping prosecutions of culpable officials were initiated. Confidence grew with the new administration.
Other African leaders have also expressed their respect for Joyce Banda, and she became the leader of the Southern African Development Community (http://www.sadc.int/)
Other massive problems still confront the tiny nation of Malawi. There is still debilitating poverty. Much of the aid provided from other nations dried up in the wake of the corruption scandals, and reinstituting faith in the country’s government will take time according to observers.
Because of the respect Joyce Banda has earned during her tenure, the world’s attention will be focused on the Presidential election scheduled for May 20, 2014.Although she has a lead over her closest rivals, some political analysts speculate anti- female bias could affect the outcome. Nevertheless, the pervading view is that she was not to blame for the underlying problems the nation faces and has performed capably. The consensus is that she will be successful in her re-election effort.
