Greg Monforton & Partners Warns Torontonians of Increased Pedestrian Accident Risk

(USGovernment-News.Com, December 27, 2013 ) Toronto – As of December 2013 there have been 38 pedestrian fatalities in Toronto, an 80 percent increase since 2012. The majority of deaths have involved seniors over the age of 65. Greg Monforton would like to remind driver of the importance of watching for pedestrians.

Driver inattentiveness as well as distracted pedestrians often lead to pedestrian accidents, however, the growing number of senior citizens moving to the downtown area, shortened daylight hours, and worsening road conditions are also factors.

According to Mike Brady, head of the city’s Traffic Safety Unit, many of the pedestrian accidents this year were caused by pedestrians crossing outside the crosswalk or intersection and drivers failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians crossing the road. Drivers and pedestrians can decrease the odds of being involved in a pedestrian accident by simply paying closer attention to what they are doing. If those two factors had been considered, about 20 fatalities could have been prevented in 2013.

Pedestrian accidents in the greater Toronto area was at an all-time low just last year and the number has been on a roller coaster for many years, however, the fatalities have not been this high since 2003.

Since 2010 the city has been adjusting traffic lights to cater to slower walkers, including the elderly, and will continue to make adjustments in order to better protect pedestrians. It is expected that 20 percent of the population will be elderly by 2031.

For pedestrians, using the crosswalk is important as is staying alert and looking both ways. If traveling during the evening cross the road in well-lit areas or wear brighter coloured clothing. Drivers should pay closer attention to their surroundings and always watch for pedestrians. Both parties however should be sure they are not distracted while commuting as it is a major cause of pedestrian accidents.
