(USGovernment-News.Com, December 27, 2013 ) Phoenix, AZ – The Arizona Department of Transportation has spoken and under a new U.S Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy, undocumented spouses, children, and parents of military personnel granted “parole in place” will be eligible for driver’s licenses.
The DHS policy issued in a November memo permits undocumented dependents of military personnel to be released conditionally into the U.S which could permit them to legally apply for a green card.
According to the state transportation office, the documents issued to the undocumented dependents adequately demonstrates an authorized presence under federal law which is a state requirement to obtain a license.
The state is however continuing the denial of licenses to immigrants under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals which has permitted 17,000 Arizona residents to stay in the United States for at least two years.
The number of undocumented immigrants related to military personnel who will now be eligible for driver’s licenses is unknown. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation approximately 5.3 percent of all car accidents in 2012 involved drivers who did not have an Arizona driver’s license including undocumented immigrants.
