(USGovernment-News.Com, December 13, 2013 ) Phoenix, AZ – Swedish furniture retailer IKEA has announced the recall of 4 million SMILA wall-mounted lamps sold in the United States and Canada after the death of a toddler who choked on the lamp’s cord.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) eight different versions of the lamp were recalled. The affected lamps include a blue star, yellow moon, pink flower, white flower, red heart, green bug, blue seashell, and orange seahorse. The defective products were sold at IKEA from 1999 through May 2013 in the United States and Canada.
The CPSC reports that a 16-month old toddler pulled the lamp cord into their crib and was entangled which eventually caused the child to choke. In another incident a 15-month-old child became entangled in the lamp’s cord and was nearly strangled. Both incidents occurred in Europe.
IKEA is asking that customers who have a SMILA wall-mounted lamp should ensure the lamp and cord are out of the reach of children and contact the company to receive a repair kit free of charge.
This is the third recall IKEA has announced in 2013; this is the second recall involving a product primarily used by children. Phillips Law Group is investigating injury claims and asks that anyone who believes their child has injured by the recalled lamp contact the law firm for a free consultation as they may be entitled to compensation.
