Dissociation Possible New Subtype of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Reports The Tapella & Eberspacher Law Firm

(USGovernment-News.Com, November 23, 2013 ) CHARLESTON, IL— A study conducted on the frequency and severity of dissociation symptoms in patients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) resulted in the recommendation of its inclusion in the DSM-V recently.

Erika J. Wolfe, Ph.D and Mark W. Miller, Ph.D., both from the National Center for PTSD at the VA Boston Healthcare System and Department of Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine interviewed 492 veterans to gather research on the topic.

Dissociation has never before been identified as a unique subtype of PTSD. Researchers now say that the pattern of “de-realization” that the studies’ PTSD patients are exhibiting is characteristic enough of dissociation to warrant separation of the category.

Marked by a notable distancing of the patient’s mental and physical self, dissociation can result from a number of traumatic events. Most notably, the shock of auto accidents, physical and sexual abuse, natural disasters, childhood violence and combat triggered dissociation among the study’s participants.

Inclusion of dissociation in the DSM-V would mean that it could qualify as a mental injury resulting from negligence. In personal injury cases of PTSD, this decision could have a significant impact on the validity of an injury claim in the eyes of the law.

Wolfe and Miller note that these findings contribute to a growing body of research supporting dissociation’s identification as a unique subtype of PTSD, though currently no changes have been made to the DSM-V.
