Over One Third of Children Killed in Car Accidents Were Not Wearing Seat Belts Reports Phillips Law Group

(USGovernment-News.Com, November 24, 2013 ) PHONEIX, AZ – According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over one third of children under 13 years of age that died in automobile accidents in 2011 were not wearing a seat belt or in a car seat.

The U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx stated “Safety is our top priority, particularly when it comes to protecting our children – who are our most vulnerable passengers.” And “Parents and caregivers can be the first line of defense by ensuring their children are correctly secured in the right seat for their size and age, and by buckling up themselves.”

In 2011, an average of 338 children were injured, and two were killed while traveling in motor vehicles across the United States, while a large percentage of these children were not wearing any form of restraint.

No matter the size of the automobile, all children should be properly restrained in a car seat, booster seat, or seat belt, which is also appropriate for their size. These safety features have been proven to save lives and reduce injuries in all child passengers.

In fact, between 1975 and 2011, the NHTSA estimated nearly 10,000 children under the age of five have been saved by restraints, while over 260 children were saved by these restraints in 2011 alone.

Phillips Law Group recommends the following safety tips for child passengers:

• Always buckle your seat belt to set a good example – unbuckled adults are more likely to have unrestrained children in the vehicle.

• Register your car or booster seat at SaferCar.gov to stay informed with any recalls on your specific model.

• Determine if you purchased the correct seat for your child based on their size and age.

• Have your car seat checked out by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician at your local car seat inspection station.

• Make sure to correctly install your car or booster seat by reading the instruction and labels in the owner’s manual.

To determine if your child is in the correct seat for their age and size, our auto accident attorneys welcome you to contact our firm or visit SaferCar.gov/TheRightSeat today. It is our goal to take part in increasing child safety across the state of Arizona and beyond.
