(USGovernment-News.Com, November 22, 2013 ) Hollywood, FL – Late Wednesday evening Hollywood commissioners approved a ban on the use of high-speed motorized vehicles on the popular Boardwalk. The ban could become law by December after a second hearing.
Under the new rules, three-wheeled Trikkes, electric bicycles, and scooters will no longer be allowed on the busy Boardwalk. Skateboards and golf carts are already prohibited, however, Segways are exempt.
Mayor Peter Bober has witnessed plenty of close calls with riders narrowly missing pedestrians.
"Someone's going to get hurt eventually. I've seen these people flying. Who wants to dodge these Trikkes? People should not have to be unnerved by these things whizzing all around them." he told the Sun-Sentinel.
Government officials want to make sure that the Boardwalk is a safe place for everyone as new rules will also target reckless bicyclists. Although the city plans to initially give out courtesy warnings, violators could be fined between $50 and $200 depending on if it is their first, second, or third violation.
Compared to 2011 the number of moped and scooter accidents in Florida have increased by 19 percent. More and more scooter and moped drivers are becoming involved in serious accidents and in 2012 the number of fatal collisions increased by 42 percent.
