(USGovernment-News.Com, November 14, 2013 ) Houston, TX – In late October Bank of America agreed to pay $32 million to settle claims of bill collector harassment. The original claim was filed by Bank of America’s credit card and mortgage loan customers and alleged that the bank was making harassing phone calls to customers on their cellphones. Some customers said they received up to 10 phone calls a day.
Now the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has announced that they will begin proposing new rules and regulations. They are hoping to finalize new rules and regulations within the next year. However, the bureau if first seeking public and business comments before proposing any new rules.
CFPB is asking Americans whether creditors and collection agencies are providing accurate information about their debt as well as information on when they are receiving debt collection calls.
In July the bureau began receiving debt collection complaints and since then has received more than 5,000 consumer complaints. Most consumers are complaining about harassing phone calls and lack of verification of the debt. Complaints about debt collection harassment included mortgage loan lenders, credit card companies, and student loan lenders. The bureau will soon begin taking complaints about payday lenders as well.
