(USGovernment-News.Com, October 25, 2013 ) Knoxville, TN – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and local law enforcement agencies are encouraging locals to turn in their unused prescriptions medications on Saturday. Sponsored by the Federal Drug Enforcement Administration, National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to get unused prescription meds off the street.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will be offering anonymous drop-offs at the bureau’s Nashville headquarters between 10a.m and 2p.m. Since its inception the bureau has collected more than 2.8 million pounds of prescription medications.
Those who do not live near Nashville may seek out other collection sites across the state at www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov.
On Saturday, Knoxville will be participating in a similar movement with America Recycles Day. Between 9a.m and 2p.m at the Kutch Park Extension residents can bring old or unwanted documents to be shredded for secure disposal as well as drop off unwanted medicines. There will also be exhibits, giveaways, games, and other activities.
It is estimated that 20% of people in the United States have used prescription drugs for non-medical use and such drug abuse is a serious and growing problem.
