(USGovernment-News.Com, October 25, 2013 ) Charleston, WV – On October 22nd the chairman of the United States Senate Aging Committee requested a federal review to determine if enough oversight is in place to make sure nursing home trust funds are being properly maintained.
An exposé on nursing home thefts by the USA Today found more than 1,500 cases in which nursing homes were cited by state and federal regulators for mishandling funds. In these cases administrators and employees tapped thousands of dollars from trust accounts. Other cases involved facilities that failed to pay interests on funds and did not carry adequate insurance to protect the money form loss or theft.
Among more than 100 prosecutions against employees, more than 30% involved the theft of thousands of dollars and at least 10 thefts exceeded $100,000. One individual was accused of taking more than $161,000 from the patient trust fund.
Unfortunately trust fund cases can be difficult to detect due to lax oversight that allows thieves to go unnoticed for months and even years. State and federal inspections primarily focus on resident health and safety with little time devoted to their financial security. About 90% of ombudsmen surveyed by the USA Today said that tighter regulations and better enforcement of existing rules are needed.
