(USGovernment-News.Com, October 24, 2013 ) BATON ROUGE, LA — A national campaign set to coincide with Teen Driver Safety Week has been implemented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on October 20 and is set to run through October 26, 2013.
Data from the NHTSA reflects that 12 percent of all teen driver deaths involved distraction and that speeding was a factor in 35 percent of them. Even more revealing is the fact that teenagers between 14 and 18 are more frequently killed by motor vehicle accidents than any other event.
Parents and their teen drivers are encouraged to discuss the importance of driver safety and implement the strategy laid out by “5 to Drive.” The plan aims to eliminate senseless teen driver deaths through five basic steps the driver will agree on with his or her parents:
1. No cell phone use, text messaging, or emailing while driving 2. No extra passengers 3. No speeding 4. No alcohol 5. No driving without a seat belt
"Inexperience and immaturity, combined with speed, drinking and driving, not wearing seat belts, distracted driving, and other teen passengers contribute to the high fatality rate of teens involved in fatal crashes," said NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. "I encourage all parents of teenagers to have an open discussion with their teen about the dangers common among young drivers and to make sure they use our '5 To Drive' program to develop the necessary skills to drive safely every trip, every time."
