(USGovernment-News.Com, October 31, 2013 ) Dothan, Al – From humble beginnings in 1957 to present day, Goodwill Homes Community Services, Inc. (GHCS) has grown from a small institution helping children to a community agency providing the most extensive services to people in need in the southwest Memphis area. GHCS provides solutions for all age ranges as well as family services. Their goal is to empower their customers to become and remain self-sufficient. Goodwill Homes serves more than 10,000 people each year.
Services provided by GHCS for seniors include one bedroom apartment housing for those with low income and are 62 years of age or older. They also provide a senior citizens center for those 55 and older and an adult daycare program focusing on people who are age 60 or older. The senior’s center offers activities and socialization opportunities.
GHCS offers individual, family and group counselling, 24 hour crisis intervention and a supportive family setting for dependent and/or neglected children as part of its foster care program.
Staying true to its original organizational purpose, Goodwill Homes offers numerous services for children to help them get a good start on their education. Three to five year old children from low income families may be enrolled in Goodwill Homes’ accredited Headstart program. They also work with Shelby County schools in various capacities to help children. Tutoring assistance is also provided. Health, mental health and nutritional assessments help to insure the child’s physical and mental needs are taken care of. Dental, vision and hearing exams are also offered.
