(USGovernment-News.Com, October 19, 2013 ) ROGERS, AR — A jury’s decision to clear Toyota of a wrongful death case from 2009 came with a surprising twist when the verdict was handed down Thursday, October 10 in Los Angeles.
Rather than convicting Toyota of wrongful death, codefendant Olga Belo was found the be at fault for the accident that caused Noriko Uno to initially mash on her accelerator after her vehicle crashed into Uno on the freeway. Uno accelerated and due to a manufacturing defect was unable to stop, losing control of the 2006 Camry and crashing into a telephone pole, causing her death.
The damages awarded to Uno’s family will be paid by Belo— whose lawyer could not be reached for comment— and amount to $10 million. The Uno family attorney was confident the jury’s decision was a win for the family, and Toyota is currently involved in numerous other suits because of the same acceleration defect.
