(USGovernment-News.Com, October 15, 2013 ) LONDON, ONT. Many people do not realize there is actually a name for that ringing sound in the ear that we get from time to time, however 20 to 50 million adults living in the United States experience tinnitus, according to the Hearing Health Foundation.
Tinnitus may also present itself as a buzzing, hissing, chirping, or whistling, while the noise may vary in loudness and be more evident when there is low to no background noise. In many cases this condition is simply annoying, however in more severe cases it may affect concentration, sleeping, and eventually relationships, thus resulting in psychological distress.
This can be caused by a number of occupations where there are loud noises present such as pilots, carpenters, road workers, musicians, landscapers, and those working with guns. When tinnitus occurs, permanent damage is being caused to sound-sensitive cells of the cochlea, an organ in the inner ear.
Although one single exposure to a sudden extremely loud noise, such as an auto accident, may result in tinnitus, there are several other conditions and illnesses which may result in tinnitus which include:
Aging
Allergies
Anemia
Benign tumors of the auditory nerve
Blockage of ears due to wax buildup
Cardiovascular disease
Certain drugs such as aspirin, antibiotics, sedatives, and antidepressants
Those suffering from tinnitus should also know that it may worsen if they drink alcohol, smoke, drink caffeinated beverages, or eat certain foods.
At Greg Monforton & Partners, our London personal injury lawyers have great sympathy for those suffering from tinnitus, which was caused by the negligent actions of another individual and believe that the victim may be entitled to compensation for their losses and damages.
