(USGovernment-News.Com, October 08, 2013 ) NEW ORLEANS, LA — BP’s 2010 Gulf of Mexico disaster violated federal law under the Clean Water Act, for which they now face fines up to $18 billion.
BP’s scientists are asking for a lower maximum penalty according to new estimates of the amount of oil that was actually spilled into the ocean. The government maintains that BP’s rig leaked 176 million gallons of oil, while BP’s experts claim it is 103 million gallons.
Judge Carl Barbier will have to decide which figures are more appropriate, though there is no disagreement between the two parties that 34 million gallons escaped the well. If BP’s estimates are used, a verdict of gross negligence would cost the company $10.5 million.
