Helping the Homeless- Cochran Firm Reports on Back Bay Missions

(USGovernment-News.Com, October 10, 2013 ) Dothan, Al – Back Bay Mission has served the Biloxi, Mississippi area since 1922 in an effort to eradicate the sting of poverty through many programs and has helped develop many non-profits currently serving southern Mississippi that provide a soup kitchen, Head Start, a health center, counseling and housing. In recent years they have placed a focus on helping the estimated 300 to 500 homeless veterans living in south Mississippi in addition to the hundreds of non-veterans.

Back Bay Mission’s supportive services for veterans focuses intensive case management and temporary financial assistance on veterans and families in or transitioning to permanent housing. They attempt to provide stability for families in the delicate situation of about to become homeless as well as those already homeless by providing prevention activities and rapid re-housing to those already homeless.

The Mission had planned on building a two story apartment building in Biloxi for homeless veterans, however part of the grant funding fell through in August and the Mission is now asking for donations to make up the approximately $21,000 shortfall so they can continue this project.

Additional services provided to veterans include health care services, fiduciary and payee services, daily living services, legal services, personal financial planning services, child care services and transportation services.

Programs for all homeless people include the Micah Day Center. This facility is open most week days during the day to provide a place for people to do laundry, take showers and even get mail.
The Home at Last program focuses on getting housing stability while helping people increase their skills and income. This program now operates 17 supportive housing units and helps over 300 people annually.

Back Bay Mission also provides emergency assistance which includes offering food from their food pantry, utility and rental assistance and help purchasing prescription medicine.

The mission can be found online at www.thebackbaymission.com and can be contacted by phone at 228-432-0301.
