(USGovernment-News.Com, October 03, 2013 ) Greenville, S.C – At least 13 cities in South Carolina banned the dangerous habit and now Greenville hopes to be the 14th to ban texting while driving. After a statewide ban failed to pass this year, the city is going to try to address the matter locally.
A task force team will be drafting an ordinance to bring to City Council in the next few weeks which will be followed by public hearings and two votes. The goal is to have a ban in place by January 1st, 2014.
South Carolina is just one of three states in the country that does not have any type of distracted driving law. Currently 44 states have texting bans while 12 states have outlawed handheld devices while driving.
“Texting while driving -- distracted driving -- frankly it’s an epidemic at this point, and I think we need to find some way to deal with it,” Mayor Pro Tem David Sudduth told GreenvilleOnline.
The ban in Greenville could include sending, viewing or even accessing electronic devices while behind the wheel.
A survey in 2013 by AT&T found that 49 percent of adult drivers admit to texting while driving which is 6 percent more than the number of teens who admit to texting while behind the wheel. In South Carolina there were more than 9,700 car accidents in 2009 caused by a distracted driver and an additional 90 had “cell phone” listed as a contributing factor.
If you or a loved one has been injured in a motor vehicle collision caused by a distracted driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more.
