(USGovernment-News.Com, September 29, 2013 ) KINGSTON, ONT. – On Monday Canada’s oldest prison will be closing after 178 years.
Kingston Penitentiary is notorious for its initials – KP - just as other well-known penitentiaries such as Alcatraz, Sing Sing, San Quentin, Rikers, and Attica. In these penitentiaries most prisoners were more concentrated on survival rather than rehabilitation.
In 1978 the prison was transformed into a protective custody institute a few years after a group of inmates took six guards hostage in what turned out to be a four-day deadly situation.
This penitentiary was known to put shivers down a convicts spine as many methods of torture were used such as the cat-o’-nine tails lashing, ‘cat’s and the ‘box’, and a cricket bat with one-inch holes used to strike the prisoners back.
