(USGovernment-News.Com, September 27, 2013 ) BATON ROUGE, LA — A Bunkie, LA man was killed while he rode his bicycle across Highway 115 in Avoyelles Parish on Wednesday, September 25.
57-year-old Richard Green was not wearing a helmet as he traveled northbound on the roadway, then attempted to cross an intersection at approximately 8:20 p.m. Green was struck by a vehicle driven by a 31-year-old Marksville woman who has yet to be named by authorities.
Louisiana law states bicyclists must ride as close to the right side of the road as feasible, and if Green had been wearing a helmet, he may have survived the injuries he sustained. Bicycle helmets are 85% effective in reducing the trauma from head and brain injuries. In 2010, 52,000 cyclists were injured in traffic incidents and 618 killed. Wearing a helmet greatly reduces the likelihood a cyclist will die from their injuries.
