(USGovernment-News.Com, September 04, 2013 ) JEFFERSON CITY, MO. — Emergency responders are present on roadside scenes constantly, ensuring that those who are in need of assistance receive it without fail. In light of the number of fatalities that Missouri roadside responders are exposed to, the state has recently enacted a law increasing penalties for speeding, passing, or intentionally striking the barrels on the scene of roadside response efforts.
Law enforcement officers, firefighters, roadside workers and tow-truck operators are all at risk of being struck by a speeding vehicle while they attempt to remedy a situation that leaves them vulnerable. Senator Jay Wasson said of the debate over the bill, “The legislation will establish a safety zone around car wrecks and incidents on Missouri’s highways. The intent is to discourage imprudent behavior in these areas where emergency personnel are focused on an incident and not on passing traffic.”
First time offenders who speed or pass in the presence of a roadside emergency will be fined $250. Following the first offense, fines will range from $1,000 if no one is injured up to $10,000 if a worker is killed.
