Number of Mirena Lawsuits Doubles In Recent Months

(USGovernment-News.Com, August 14, 2013 ) New York, NY - The number of lawsuits filed against Bayer over its Mirena intrauterine device (IUD) has nearly doubled since the cases were consolidated in April 2013, according to the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML). The latest court documents show that 105 lawsuits are now pending in the federal multidistrict litigation (MDL) involving Mirena. More than 100 lawsuits have also been filed in New Jersey in a separate MDL.

As the number of filed cases continues to increase, reports are surfacing that thousands of women have complained about dangerous side effects associated with the IUD. According to reports, the FDA has received more than 70,000 complaints involving the Mirena IUD since 2000. The most serious of these complaints involved device dislocation and uterine perforations. It has been reported that since 2008, 4,775 women have reported device dislocation, whereby the device moves in a manner not intended by the manufacturer, in that the IUD becomes embedded in the uterus, shifts from its original position, or migrates into the abdominal cavity. Between 2008 and 2012, 12,047 cases of device expulsion, 3,774 complaints of abdominal pain and 1,322 reports of uterine perforation were also received by the FDA. Infection, scarring and discomfort were also reported.

Lawsuits against Bayer allege that the device led to serious injuries and that women were not properly informed of the risks associated with the IUD. The company has also been accused of misleading marketing practices in the past. If you have experienced side effects or injury following implantation with the Mirena IUD, you may have legal recourse to join the growing number of cases. The attorneys working with ClassAction.org are offering free individual case reviews and can help determine whether you are able to take legal action.
