(USGovernment-News.Com, August 12, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Due to falling sales and increasing pressure by anti-pornography advocates, adult and sexthemed magazines will no longer be sold on U.S. military bases worldwide. There are a total 48 adult-sophisticate magazine, among 841 periodicals no longer being offered in the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
Other titles getting the ax, but not necessarily related to adult pleasure, are English Garden, SpongeBob comics, the New York Review of Books and the Saturday EVening Post. Morality in Media, an anti-pronography group based in Washington, called the most a “great victory” in its campaign against sexual exploitation, especially within the military.
The cutbacks started taking effect Wednesday. No new orders of the periodicals will be placed and the ones existing will be taken off the shelves. However, hundreds of top-sellers will still continue to be sold, including People, Men’s Health and Cosmopolitan.
Since 1998, the category of “adult sophisticate” magazines have declined a staggering 86 percent, according to Chris Ward, a spokesman for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. In 1996, a federal law known as the Military Honor and Decency Act, prohibited the sale and display of hard-core pornographic magazines.
