(USGovernment-News.Com, August 07, 2013 ) Windsor, ON – According to two different studies from the University of Michigan and from the American Automobile Association (AAA) fewer young adults are getting their driver’s licences. According to researches the number of 19-year-olds with a driver’s licence is 18% lower than it was in 1987. Researchers say the numbers have also fallen in Canada.
According to the AAA study, by age 18 approximately 54% of teens have their licence although 44% received their licences within one year of the minimum age requirements.
Researchers believe that the drop in numbers is due to the cost of buying a car and maintaining it, a shift in demographics, and the increase of internet use as teens can contact friends online instead of driving to meet them.
Nonetheless, according to Transportation Canada by age 19 there were more than 1.1 million licenced drivers in 2011. Furthermore, it is estimated that more than 20,000 teens were injured in motor vehicle accidents that same year.
Statistics from the Ontario Ministry of Transportation indicate that 19-year-olds drivers were the 2nd most injured drivers in motor vehicle accidents. Although the number of licenced drivers is lower than previous years, teen drivers need to take precautions while out on the road.
If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident caused by a teen driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages and more. An experienced Windsor auto accident lawyer can help you determine if you may be eligible to make a claim.
