The Eichholz Law Firm Would Like to Remind Drivers of the Emergency Vehicle Rules of the Road

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 26, 2013 ) Savannah, GA – It is estimated that emergency medical services and the fire department responded to 45,000 calls last year, unfortunately when it comes to emergency vehicles some drivers do not fully understand what they’re supposed to do when they see them approaching.

In 2013 eight EMS drivers were killed while on their way to a call, many of them caused by another driver’s negligence. A majority of drivers are not aware of the sirens until the emergency vehicle is directly behind them, some simply stop in the middle of the road, and others are confused about what to do.

When an emergency vehicle approaches drivers should move to their right to allow emergency personnel to pass. If a motorist is at an intersection with a green light they should drive through, not stop, in order to let emergency vehicles continue on their route.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2009, there were approximately 60 fatal car accidents involving emergency vehicles that were in route to or from an emergency in the United States. The majority of emergency vehicles involved in such crashes were police vehicles.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident with an emergency vehicle due to a negligent driver, the victim may be entitled to compensation for property damage, medical bills, lost wages, and more. An experienced Savannah car accident attorney can help you determine if you may be eligible to make a claim against the individual who caused your injuries.
