Phillips Law Groups Reports Summer’s Fourth Hiking-Related Death at ‘The Wave’

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 25, 2013 ) PHOENIX, AZ –Elisabeth Ann Bervel of Mesa, AZ died of cardiac arrest while attempting to navigate the ‘The Wave’ with her husband in blazing 90+ temperatures Tuesday, July 23. Bervel and her husband were celebrating an anniversary with a visit to the landmark, but got lost on an unmarked trail and spent hours in intense heat and humidity.

A sandstone rock formation at the Arizona-Utah border, ‘The Wave’ is one of the most photographed locations in America. A lottery system is used to dole out each of the 7,300 annual permits that are granted to those wishing to traverse the dangerous trail. Arizona officials report that over 48,000 individuals applied for these permits in 2012, and that the Bervels won their permits through an online drawing seven months ago.

Sadly, Bervel’s death is the fourth hiking-related fatality Kane County has witnessed this summer, sparking comment from officials at Vermillion Cliffs National Monument that policies and procedures for visitors to the Arizona-Utah desert destination need to be reviewed.

In Arizona’s unrelenting heat high temperatures outside correspond to soaring temperatures in vehicles, and it is important for parents and caretakers to remember that children and animals are never safe in an unattended car, even with the windows down. A car interior can become like an oven and temperatures inside soar, killing defenseless animals and children in a matter of minutes.
