Residents Urged to Keep Doors and Windows Locked or Secured During Summer Months

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 21, 2013 ) San Francisco, CA -- Residents have been warned regarding the potential threat to windows and doors during the warmer weather. According to the police, summer months often see a rise in burglary due to windows and doors being left open to help with heat.

The police will be on regular patrol of neighborhoods and are available to offer advice to local residents regarding how to handle the heat without sacrificing safety. The police will also be handing out leaflets to residents in hotspot areas, according to a statement from the department.

Officers urge residents to lock both their doors and windows in both their residents and vehicles. They also urge that individuals report any suspicious activity in their area.

Detective Inspector Vinnie De Curtis stated police “Tend to see a seasonal rise in burglary and theft during the summer months due to people leaving their windows open as they go to bed at night.” Office De Curtis added, “An open window or door can often be an invitation to thieves who are then able to get into people’s homes without causing a disturbance.”

“This isn’t just about reducing burglary. It’s about reducing the upset and distress that comes with having a stranger in your home ransacking your private things and taking not only your valuables but items that are very personal and irreplaceable.”

The officer noted that it is just as important to lock up cars as it is important to keep the house safe. “The same message applies to cars – remove valuables from the car and get rid of any signs – such as suction marks on the windscreen or MP3 cables – that show that valuables have been in the car as a thief may assume you have stored them in the glove box. People who do leave their cars insecure also risk invalidating their insurance as some companies may refuse to pay out if people have left them unlocked.”

De Curtis concluded by stating ““I urge local residents to be extra vigilant over the summer months and to report anything suspicious.”
