Research Finds Women Found to Be Happier Following Divorce

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 18, 2013 ) Albuquerque, NM -- When many think of a recently divorced person, they think of a depressed, distraught and emotionally vulnerable individual. However, research is beginning to show that women may actually be better off than men when it comes to happiness after divorce.

The results come from a London Kingston University study. Over the course of 20 years, researchers questioned 10,000 U.K. Citizens ranging in age of 16 and 60. The questions were geared toward gauging happiness levels both before and after major life milestones. According
to the research results published in journal Economica, women are significantly more happy than men up to five years following divorce.

"In the study we took into account the fact that divorce can sometimes have a negative financial impact on women, but despite that it still makes them much happier than men," said Professor Yannis Georgellis, Director of the Center for Research in Employment, Skills and Society at Kingston Business School. "One possible explanation could be that women who enter into an unhappy marriage feel much more liberated after divorce than their male counterparts."

The study is in contrast to a study made by the Institute of America Values last decade. It found that unhappily married adults who were divorced were no more happy than those who stayed together.

One factor not bought into the research is what state the men and women went into, and came out of the divorce. Financial standing is often transferred from the man to the woman more often. Financial gain, as well as asset gain is often given to women, rather than taken from. Furthermore, women often are not held to the same standards of “getting one's self together” after a divorce. Single women are more desirable than single men after a divorce. Each factor can play a large part in the rebounding of happiness following a divorce.
