Fanatical Arguments A Good Predictor of Divorce

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 18, 2013 ) Albuquerque, NM -- Last Friday, Kansas State University researcher Sonya Britt shed new light on a study she published in Family Relations journal in 2012. The publication was titled "Examining the Relationship between Financial Issues and Divorce," and found that arguing about money is the top predictor of divorce. She discovered that, regardless of their net worth, income or debt, couples who argue about funds early in their relationships face a greater risk for divorce. "Arguments about money [are] by far the top predictor of divorce," she held. "It's not children, sex, in-laws or anything else. It's money -- for both men and women."

The research was part of the National Survey of Families and Households and looked at extensive data from over forty-five hundred couples across the country. The arguments about finances were generally longer in duration and more severe than other types of marital disputes, the researchers concluded. The time invested in the relationship did not play a part in the results. Britt states, "It doesn't matter how long ago it was, but when they were first together and already arguing about money, there is a good chance they are going to have poor relationship satisfaction." The arguments were the key factor in the probability, not the money problem itself.

In a related study conducted a year earlier, researchers at the University of Missouri drew similar conclusions from their data. They found that married couples that receive government assistance faced a high probability of divorce. However, arguments about money were not figured into the probabilities.
