(USGovernment-News.Com, July 18, 2013 ) Albuquerque, NM -- According to a long term 1958 National Child Development Study, the results of which were recently published in the journal Psychoneuroendocrinology, the children of divorced parents might be more vulnerable to some health problems later in life. The study was conducted by researchers at the University College London in London, England. The sample group consisted of over seven thousand participants that were forty-four years old and were the children of divorce before the age of sixteen.
Researchers found that a significant percentage of these individuals had higher levels of C-reactive protein, which is a blood marker of inflammation. The elevated levels of this protein are often associated with a greater risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Lead author of the study, Dr. Rebecca Lacey, postulated that rather than the event of the divorce itself, fewer educational opportunities, economic hardships and other disadvantages that arise after divorce might be to blame for the health disparity. "Our study suggests that it is not parental divorce or separation per se which increases the risk of later inflammation but that it is other social disadvantages, such as how well the child does in education, which are triggered by having experienced parental divorce which are important," she hypothesized.
In 2011, a similar study was conducted that discovered a link between children of divorce and individuals who contemplated or committed suicide later in their lives. Researchers found a significant difference between the children of divorce and children whose parents remained together, in this regard.
