Mirena Lawsuits Continue To Be Filed As Number Of Complaints Surpasses 70,000

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 16, 2013 ) New York, NY –The FDA has reportedly received more than 70,000 individual complaints from women implanted with Mirena, as lawsuits alleging that the intrauterine device (IUD) can cause serious injury continue to be filed across the country.

The Mirena intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a T-shaped hormone-releasing device that can be placed within the vagina for up to five years to prevent pregnancy. Although widely used, some women have claimed that the device may ‘migrate’, or move from its intended position, potentially causing severe injuries. Uterine embedment and device expulsion have been reported, as well as the more serious side effect of organ perforation. This allegedly occurs when the Mirena IUD moves into the abdomen, potentially leading to scarring, bleeding, and discomfort. The Food and Drug Administration’s contraindications warnings for Mirena include ectopic pregnancy, sepsis, ovarian cysts, and perforation.

Lawsuits against Bayer have been filed across the country alleging that the pharmaceutical company sold the IUD in an unsafe and defective condition, and failed to provide proper warnings to women that the device could migrate outside the uterus. Device migration has been alleged in a number of these cases and, for some women, has caused permanent damage, according to the suits. The attorneys working with ClassAction.org continue to offer free case evaluations to women who experienced side effects after being fitted with the IUD. These case reviews have no obligation or cost, and can be found by visiting http://www.classaction.org/mirena.html.
