Jordan, who was the director of the North Carolina Division of Mental Health Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services, was said to be traveling north on Louisburg Road in North Raleigh when he was struck and killed by Ellis, who was attempting to pass Jordan in the far right lane. Ellis was convicted of misdemeanor death by motor vehicle and failure to reduce speed. Precautions should always be taken to avoid traffic accidents, but especially when sharing the roadways with cyclists.
Cyclists are even more vulnerable to the dangers of distracted, fatigued, or reckless drivers than motorists, because there simply is no physical barrier to surround their body and protect it from impact. Riddle & Brantley wants to remind all drivers to keep an eye on cyclists as they pass them on the road, because getting too close to the cyclist could cause them to wreck, leading to unnecessary injury, and possibly death. Raleigh cyclists, too, should be wary of riding on roads in areas of high traffic, or at night. Always wear a helmet and reflective clothing, if riding after dark.
