‘Rafting Gone Wild’ Alcohol Ban in Effect Reports Arnold Law Firm

(USGovernment-News.Com, July 13, 2013 ) SACRAMENTO, CA – Officials in Sacramento County have issued a ban on alcohol on a portion of the American River during today’s ‘Rafting Gone Wild’ event because of raucous behavior during last year’s event. The alcohol ban was issued on Thursday by county Director of Parks Jeff Leatherman to forestall possible property destruction or personal injury.

The ban affects the area of the American River between Hazel and Watt avenues, along the American River Parkway, where law enforcement officials from county parks, the county sheriff’s department and Rancho Cordova police will be stationed. Officials will also be stationed at River Bend Park and Harrington Way, and the county’s DUI task force will be deploying checkpoints for drunken drivers leaving the river. Leatherman warns attendees to leave alcohol at home.

According to Leatherman, the decision to bar alcohol from the popular water event was based on expectations that this year’s event will repeat the unsafe circumstances created in past years if alcohol were allowed. Eyewitnesses at past events have described the scene as growing out-of-control, with deputies and rangers facing difficulty trying to keep up with the chaos in the large crowd. It was also said that rocks were thrown at rafters, and fights broke out along the riverbanks among drunken spectators and against law enforcement officials.

A sandbar known as “Gilligan’s Island” was the site of spectator revelry at 2011’s event, as drunken attendees gathered to view the rafts. Twenty-three of the 3,000 attendees were arrested that year.

Another factor affecting the decision to ban alcohol was the nature of the comments found on the event’s Facebook page.
