(USGovernment-News.Com, July 04, 2013 ) Dublin 2, Ireland -- Researchers from the University of Gothenburg carried out a study on 42 dinghy sailors who were part of the national sailing team or who were students at a Swedish sailing academy. Many studies have been done to show risk of injuries in many sports, but this is the first one done to study dinghy sailors.
Results of the study show that 20 percent of the injuries reported by the sailors during the study were because of accidents or external force. But in four out of fice cases, the injury was due to overtrain during physical training. Knees had highest number of injuries reported by sailors, but the risk of injury was different between younger and older sailors.
While younger sailors often have more pain their torso and back, older sailors who are on a national team often sustain injuries to their shoulders. The study also found that injuries rarely occur during racing. Instead, physical training runs the highest risk of injury, due to the heavy strain the sailors put their bodies in during those times.
Just over one-third of sailors have a personal trainer, which could be why the chances of injury are so high during physical training. According to Lena B-ymo-Having, sailors need personal training programs and personal trainers to help them cater to their bodies needs.
