(USGovernment-News.Com, June 23, 2013 ) Arlington, TX -- City council member Janet Miller said the city needs to take more time to look at the new law that was proposed for Kansas city Wichita. On Tuesday, the city voted no on the new law that would allow those with conceal carry permits to carry their weapons in city government buildings that didn’t have adequate screening and security.
Instead, municipal buildings can ask for a 6-month exemption from that law to study the conceal carry law and how it affects businesses and those who carry the guns. Miller is just one of five council members who asked for that exemption. Other voters wanted the study of conceal carry in the city before it makes any decisions on what Wichita should allow.
City attorney Sharon Dickgrafe also noted that city council can ask for an exemption of up to four years, which will give them ample time to study conceal carry. She says that would help outline what has to happen and would require staff to give Kansas’ attorney general the information it needs to to create an adequate security plan. Residents are worried about what could happen if businesses don’t have the proper security systems and those holding the weapons don’t have a conceal carry license. According to Wichita resident Craig Harms, criminals aren’t going to care whether they have a license to carry and it’s irrational to limit the study on conceal carry, since those breaking the law usually don’t care about the law.
