(USGovernment-News.Com, June 13, 2013 ) SACRAMENTO, CA – A Sacramento Superior Court judge backed up the $23 million punitive-award in a wrongful death and elder abuse civil trial brought against the Emeritus senior living corporation earlier this year.
The victim, 82-year-old Joan Boice, was an Alzheimer’s patient who sustained bed sores during her residence at the Emeritus at Emerald Hills assisted living facility. She spent five years there and then died only a few months after moving out. Her death certificate listed the pressure ulcer she had incurred as a substantial factor in her death.
Judge Judy Hersher stated that the evidence showed a “high degree of reprehensibility” in the care that the Seattle-based firm had provided. She went on to write that Emeritus’ management knew that their memory care unit was ill-trained and inadequately staffed and told employees to remain silent about the issue.
